📖 Comprehensive Note

Hypertonic solution — a solution with a higher solute concentration (and therefore lower water potential) than the cell interior. When a cell is placed in a hypertonic solution, water leaves the cell by osmosis (net movement from cell interior to outside).

  • Plant cells: the cell membrane pulls away from the cell wall (plasmolysis), causing wilting and loss of turgor.
  • Animal cells: cells shrink and become wrinkled (crenation), e.g., RBCs in concentrated saline.
  • Osmosis is passive and driven by water potential differences.
